Periodontology is a branch of dentistry that deals with the study and treatment of supportive tooth tissue, so-called periodont (gums, bone, cement and periodontal ligament). It begins as gingivitis, that is inflammation of the gum. It is caused by soft (plaque) and hard deposits (gums) on the teeth, which contain bacteria, or pathogens.
Inflamated gums are swollen, painful and can bleed when brushing. If not treated, it progresses to periodontitis. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation of deeper structures surrounding the tooth (bone and fiber that connect the tooth and bone). By destroying these structures, pockets are created that eventually are deepen and ultimately lead to tooth decay and loss. It is therefore important to visit your dentist at least twice a year.
